Deadpool - Movie Review

Look how far we've come. 

After the atrocious... Thing... That was called Deadpool in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Ryan Reynolds and Fox Studios finally made up for that mess, and perfected the character. 

Deadpool isn't the conventional comic book character. And this was no conventional comic book movie. For one thing, it lived up well to its R rating, and anything less would have seemed really toned down. For another thing, Ryan Reynolds is simply perfect. Right from the opening credits and the first scene, you know what kind of movie this is going to be. There's even a dig at the X-Men Origins: Wolverine Deadpool (which was inevitable), plus little snaps at Ryan Reynolds and Fox Studios themselves. There was no holding back on this one. 

Not being produced by Marvel, but by Fox Studios, for once, is probably for the better. This movie probably wouldn't have been as faithful to its source material if Marvel produced it, especially since it would fall under the Disney banner. 

The story too, is really simple. So simple, in fact, that I won't even summarise it, with risk of giving away the entire thing. This simplicity, combined with the character's all out insanity, makes this movie fresh, and sets it apart from all the other dead serious, dark and all-hope-lost movies in the genre. 

Funnily enough, this movie was partially (and hilariously) marketed as a romantic movie (and the marketing for this movie was top class), because of Valentine's Day. Even funnier, is that it actually is. You could almost call this movie a romantic comedy. Almost. As far as it goes as a comedy, and unlike most 'comedies', its humour is genuine. 

One thing that really did surprise me was the depth of every character. I mean it. Even the taxi driver in the second trailer. For a movie like this, it isn't expected, but I'm glad it was that way. The visuals are great, except perhaps Colossus, who seems a little unfinished with his CGI.

However, it isn't perfect. I have one big problem with the movie. It's short, compared to most other movies, and that isn't necessarily a bad thing. But in that little time frame, I felt like too much time was used on Deadpool's origin story, because the current-day events were much more fun. It needed the origin story, of course, but I think it would have been fine had it been shorter. 

Other than that though, Deadpool is a great movie. Especially the way the character is used.
