Oh where do I begin with this movie?
Guardians Of The Galaxy is a 2014 Marvel Studios production that completely took the world by storm. It was the company's first big gamble ever since Iron Man, and it payed off big time.
This is a part of my Marvel movie review run, leading into Captain America: Civil War this May. For the whole sequence, it's listed on the left sidebar.
The story follows Peter Quill, from Earth, who is taken into space and when he grows up, becomes a space outlaw who steals things to sell, and labels himself 'Starlord'. He steals an orb that turns out to be an Infinity Stone, which is wanted by the main villain, Ronan The Accuser, and in turn becomes a target for him.
That's the basis of it. This movie is really simple, and that's what it needed to be. And it is so much fun. Not every movie has to be dark, and this wasn't. The score is amazing! It captured the essence of the movie and introduced a whole generation to some great music.
What's important in a movie like this is the characters. Balancing them, keeping them interesting, it's all a challenge. But this movie makes it work. You know it's odd when it gets me to care about a tree and a raccoon. And that raccoon. Bradley Cooper wasn't even seen, but he stole the show. Something Marvel does well with such a large roster is that it knows how to balance its cast. This movie is no different. Starlord has most of the focus, but the other characters aren't one-dimensional, especially if you count the deleted scenes.
This movie is really fast-paced. It has to get through assembling the team, and getting to the main story, and it just keeps going. I'm not going to spoil anything, because if anyone hasn't watched this movie, they need to drop everything and watch it right now.
There is one problem I have with this movie, though, and that's its villain. Ronan is a decent villain, but I felt like he could have been more. Not going to say any more though.
A lot of the criticism towards this movie is misled. People seem to stereotype every comic book movie into something serious and dark, and that's not how it always is. This movie is something different. It's meant to be something fun, have a tone of its own. I'm a fan of dark movies, but not every movie has to be. If you look at this movie in the same way (And even the one I'm doing in my next Marvel review, whenever that is), then it's a great time. Personally, Guardians Of The Galaxy is my favourite movie, and James Gunn has given me a lot of writing tips on his Facebook page.
