After all the superhero movie reviews I've done so far, it's inevitable that I'd eventually arrive at this trainwreck.
Spider-Man 3 was released in 2007 and was a sequel to one of the greatest superhero movies of all time. It was supposed to be something great, and it absolutely wasn't.
There are so few positives with this movie for me. There were three villains, and none of them were deep. Not one. There should have been only one, fleshed out villain, but instead we got what is essentially half of the Sinister Six (although the members are different) in a juggling act that really didn't work out. Sandman is there for the whole film (sort of) and the Green Goblin (or I should say, an excuse for) is there at the beginning, while Venom is there at the end. It's a clear case of studio interference. It should have solely been about Uncle Ben's killer and his story, or Harry's story of redemption against Peter for killing his dad, or the story of the Symbiote. Not an incohesive combination of the three.
And the poor story and characters aren't even the end of it! Peter Parker goes emo in this for no justifiable reason, and there are scenes of him dancing. In a Spider-Man film! Just what were the screenwriters thinking?
I'll even list out the plots in this movie to explain the extent of the mayhem.
-Harry wants revenge
-Peter is taken over the Symbiote, becoming much more aggressive.
-Peter is after Sandman
-Peter wants to marry Mary Jane
-Peter's co-worker wants the spotlight
-Peter is emo for no reason
-Peter dates Gwen Stacey at one point, who is also miraculously the former girlfriend of Eddie Brock
-Harry loses his memory
-Peter is taken over the Symbiote, becoming much more aggressive.
-Peter is after Sandman
-Peter wants to marry Mary Jane
-Peter's co-worker wants the spotlight
-Peter is emo for no reason
-Peter dates Gwen Stacey at one point, who is also miraculously the former girlfriend of Eddie Brock
-Harry loses his memory
Does all of that not seem like a formula for failure?
Spider-Man 3 made more than the first two movies, and the quality is nowhere near them. It managed to kill the whole franchise which was reportedly planning a fourth movie featuring Carnage, and got it rebooted to a franchise which is now ironically being rebooted again, but I'll talk about the Amazing Spider-Man movies in later reviews.
There are a couple of scenes that I like, including Sandman's formation and his fight with Symbiote Spider-Man, but the movie is just rubbish.
