Spider-Man 2 was released in 2004, and is widely considered to be one of the best sequels ever made, and also the best of the Sam Raimi Spider-Man trilogy. I can concur with both of those statements.
Spider-Man 2 has a different tone that the original movie, a more personal one. I'd call this more of a Peter Parker movie than I would a Spider-Man movie, which is not a bad thing. Definitely not. In this movie, Peter Parker is struggling with his powers (which is really never explained, but I'll look over it), and he's constantly asking himself if being Spider-Man is right for him. At the same time, Dr Otto Octavius loses everything, and is taken over by his mechanical arms, and made a great villain. Even his real introduction scene as Dr Octopus is brilliantly done, and feels like something right out of a horror movie. And the fact that this isn't his will, it's the arms', is highlighted well.
The place that Peter Parker is in this movie makes it an emotional roller coaster, and one that I could watch a hundred times over (which I'm sure I've already done) and not get bored of. It just keeps on going, and moves form place to place really quick, which is handled in a great way. Peter's relationships with Mary Jane, Harry Osborne and Aunt May are pivotal to his character, how everything comes together is a great thing to see.
And the humour is great. Sometimes humour is just terrible, but in this movie it's good, like the elevator scene, and of course J Jonah Jameson. JK Simmons is perfect. I can say that many many times over.
Looking at the movie now, I'm glad to see how far the story took Peter Parker, and basically dragged him through the dirt. I felt genuine sympathy for him, and when a movie can do that, you know it's good.
So overall, Spider-Man 2 is a well directed, beautiful looking, and greatly balanced movie, which deserves all the acclaim it receives.
On a scale where M is the lowest, and R is the highest possible rating, with the highlighted letter being the rating:
